Ann Jean Shelden, a devoted educator whose career touched generations of students, teachers, and families in Edmond, Oklahoma, died September 10, 2026. She was 83.
Ann Jean was born October 16, 1942, to Carl and Freda Moyer Bolton. Education became both her profession and one of the defining commitments of her life.
She began her career in the classroom, including teaching second grade at Will Rogers Elementary School in Edmond. She later became principal of Northern Hills Elementary School, where she was known for her dedication to students, support of teachers, and commitment to creating an enriching environment for learning.
During her tenure at Northern Hills, the school received national Blue Ribbon recognition, reflecting the excellence of the school community she helped lead. Ann Jean herself received national recognition as a National Distinguished Principal, honoring her leadership and contributions to elementary education.
Her commitment to education extended beyond the traditional classroom. At Northern Hills, she helped foster opportunities for children to learn from the natural world, including development of the school's wetland and outdoor learning environment. Her work reflected a belief that education should encourage curiosity, exploration, and a lasting connection between children and the world around them.
Family was equally important to Ann Jean. She was a devoted daughter who cared lovingly for her mother in the later years of her life, a loving sister who remained closely involved in the lives of both of her sisters, and a close and involved aunt to her niece and nephews. Ann Jean especially loved Christmas and the traditions that brought family and friends together. She enjoyed opening her home, entertaining, and hosting parties and gatherings. She had a lifelong love of ironing, something she had enjoyed since she was a little girl, and was known for happily ironing for family as well. She also enjoyed baking bread to share with friends. These small but memorable expressions of care were part of what made Ann Jean uniquely herself.
Ann Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Allen Shelden; her sister, Dr. Sharon C. Underwood; and her parents, Carl and Freda Moyer Bolton.
She is survived by her sister, Janice K. Struck; her nephews, Bradley Struck and Dr. Bryan Struck; and her niece, Beth Ann Roth.
Ann Jean will be remembered for her devotion to family, her generosity toward friends and neighbors, her love of bringing people together, and a remarkable career dedicated to children and education. Her influence lives on in her family and in the generations of students, educators, and colleagues whose lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ann Jean's honor to the Northern Hills PTO, supporting the school and students to whom she devoted so much of her life.
