Barbara Jean (Taney) Shane was born March 16, 1944, to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard L. Taney in Omaha, Nebraska. She had one older brother, David Taney. Growing up, she and her family lived in several small towns in Nebraska including Hershey, Callaway, and Plattsmouth.
Barbara was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist church.
Barbara married Robert (Bob) Shane at St. Paul United Methodist church in Omaha on April 6,1963, when they were both nineteen years old. They have two sons, Jeffrey R Shane and James (Jim) A Shane. Jeffrey Shane and wife Pittaya (Fon) Shane live in Athens, Ohio and Jim Shane and wife Gayle live in Yukon, Oklahoma. Jim and Gayle blessed Barbara and Bob with two granddaughters, Megan (Shane) Ederer and Mariah Shane of Orlando, Florida. Megan and her husband Morgan Ederer presented Barbara with a great grandson Waylon Ederer of Moore, Oklahoma.
Barbara worked as a bank teller after graduating from Benson High School in Omaha. After the boys were born, she worked sporadically but always at the bank. Later, she became interested in the financial markets. While working at a small brokerage firm in Oklahoma, she studied on her own and passed all the required tests to become a stockbroker, and to hold other positions in the financial industry. She held many positions including broker, examiner for the Oklahoma Securities commission, and compliance officer. She also worked on a committee at FINRA (Financial Industries Regulatory Authority) where she helped develop tests required for those wanting to work in the financial industry.
When Bob went back to college in the early 1980’s to finish his degree in business, she decided she wanted to go to school as well. She graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a degree in accounting.
In 1991, Barbara and Bob moved to Columbus, Ohio where she became compliance officer for Nationwide Insurance Company. She worked there until 2006 when Barbara and Bob retired and moved back to Oklahoma to spend more time with Jim and Gayle and their two granddaughters.
In 1990, Bob found it necessary to get help for his addiction to alcohol and he joined Alcoholics Anonymous. Barbara looked for help for herself, and found it in Al-Anon. As her recovery progressed, she performed service work for the local Al-Anon community and worked with many other women and their struggling family members who were likewise suffering from addiction.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Leonard L Taney, and her brother David Taney. She is survived by husband Bob Shane, sons Jeffrey Shane and wife Fon, and Jim Shane and wife Gayle. Granddaughters Megan (Shane) Ederer, husband Morgan and great grandson Waylon, and Mariah Shane. Also survived by Bob’s sister Kathy Witt and husband Tom, and brother Douglas Shane and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara liked to travel, enjoyed music and musical theater, indoor gardening, playing golf, and spending time with her granddaughters and participating in their activities.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Touchmark of Coffee Creek for the great care Barbara received for the last three years.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to United Way of Central Oklahoma in Barbara’s name.
