It is with great sadness that Brenda Kim Treece’s husband and children announce her passing on May 7, 2026, at the age of 68. Kim was born on November 30, 1957, in Ninnekah, Oklahoma, to Almon and Janis Underwood. She grew up there with her younger brother, Tim, until the family moved to Newcastle, Oklahoma, in the summer of 1965.
Kim graduated from Newcastle High School in 1976 where she was a proud member of the varsity women’s basketball team. That fall, she began her studies at the Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma, earning her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in December 1979. She later continued her commitment to learning by completing a master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from Central State in 1986.
Kim’s career in education began in the spring of 1980 as a 4th-grade teacher at Chisholm Elementary School where she taught for four years. She then moved to Orvis Risner Elementary, serving as a 2nd-grade teacher for the next eleven years. In the fall of 1995, she transitioned into school counseling at Sequoyah Middle School, a role in which she served and supported students for twenty years. When Heartland Middle School opened in 2016, she joined its inaugural staff as a counselor and continued her work there for nine years, retiring in May 2025 after a remarkable 45-year career dedicated to the growth and well-being of children.
Kim and Dean met in the winter of 1980 at 50 Penn Place in Oklahoma City introduced by a mutual friend. After their first phone call, they began dating and were soon inseparable. They shared countless adventures together, cruising around town on Dean’s motorcycle, traveling, skiing, visiting friends, tailgating, attending OU football games, and gathering with family. They also loved spending evenings two-stepping at their favorite venues around town.
Kim and Dean were married on June 6, 1981, at Central State University’s Y-Chapel of Song. They settled into their first home in Edmond and welcomed their son, Cory Dean, in June 1983. In September 1988, their daughter, Alexis Brooke "Lexy", was born. As a devoted mother, Kim always put her children first and stayed closely involved in their lives, serving as a Den Leader and Girl Scout Leader among many other volunteer positions with sports and activities. She loved cheering Cory and Lexy on in golf and basketball and treasured the many family vacations they took together. Like her father, Al, Kim was a strong supporter of education and encouraged her children to work hard and achieve as honor students in high school and throughout college.
Kim was a phenomenal grandma to her six grandchildren Charlotte, Benjamin, Brielle, Avery, Hope, and Penelope. Her greatest joy in life was having her family over to their home and spoiling her grandkids with sweets and fun toys. She was lovingly given the nickname “KK” by the kids which she embraced. She loved getting updated pictures and videos of all her grandkids and was quick to brag about them all to her friends and family.
Kim was an extremely giving woman. She had a knack for memorizing important dates for her family and close friends and always made those around her feel loved through gifts and personal messages. She was a wonderful listener when someone needed to talk, offering thoughtful, constructive advice when it mattered most. Kim spent much of her time checking in on family and friends through phone calls and was such a bright light for many people. She also gave her time as an ACT tutor for many years to help high school students raise their testing scores for college applications. Kim was a huge presence in the Edmond education community and was always advocating improving children’s experiences. Kim was also involved as a committee member for improving the education of the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial.
Kim loved supporting OU and OSU sports, attending live events and watching the teams on TV. She was an avid supporter of the Oklahoma City Thunder from the team’s inception, rarely missing a game.
Kim is preceded in death by her parents Janis and Almon. She is survived by her husband Dean, children Cory, Lexy, Amanda, and Alex, grandchildren Charlotte, Benjamin, Brielle, Avery, Hope, and Penelope, and brothers, Tim, and Gene as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
