Calvin Bruce Mott

April 23, 1944 — April 23, 2026

Edmond

Calvin Mott, a devoted follower of Christ, gifted music educator, and beloved family man, went to be with the Lord on his 82nd birthday – April 23, 2026 – leaving behind a legacy marked by faith, humble service, and love.

Calvin was born on April 23, 1944, in Bay City Michigan to Donovan D. Mott and Ethelyn M. Mott (Brown). Within his first few years of life, their family moved to Tulsa, OK for Donovan to work at Dow Chemical as an engineer, and they would plant roots there for the next 50+ years. Calvin graduated from Nathan Hale High School in 1962 and had developed a deep love for music.

Calvin attended the University of Oklahoma where he earned a degree in Music Education and enjoyed playing in the drumline of the Pride of Oklahoma. Far more significantly, those years in Norman were when he met Brenda Kay Roan. Following an incident where he smashed his hand in a heavy metal door in the dorms, Kay was assigned to take notes for him in a music class and the two quickly fell in love. Calvin and Kay were married on August 13th, 1966, at College Heights Baptist Church in Chickasha, OK and would have been married for 60 years this upcoming August.

Calvin and Kay both dedicated much of their lives to teaching music – both in schools as well as privately in their home, and their passion for learning and genuine love for each person and family they encountered inspired countless students. Calvin taught at several schools in the Mid-Del area including Elementary Schools, Carl Albert Junior High, Kerr Junior High, Del Crest Junior High, and at Dale Public Schools. He and Kay both continued teaching privately even up until just about a year ago, when they moved back to Oklahoma from Houston. Although Calvin loved teaching music and leading his groups to perform well, what he truly treasured were the relationships he built with students, families, and other educators. He believed music was a gift from God - one that could shape hearts, uplift spirits, and draw people together. Whether leading a classroom rehearsal or encouraging a hesitant student, Calvin’s patience and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of learning from him.

His love for music extended far beyond the classroom. Calvin faithfully served at Meadowood Baptist Church in Midwest City for over 35 years, using his talents to glorify God and to enrich the worship of the church family there. Through playing the organ including offertory duets with Kay at the piano each Sunday, founding an orchestra there, and quiet behind-the-scenes service, he used music as a ministry – pointing others toward truth, hope, and joy in Christ. God used Calvin and Kay’s years at their church home of Meadowood to grow them in their walk with Him in significant ways, and the relationships they built there have been blessings throughout their entire lives.

Above everything else, Calvin cherished his family. He was a loving husband to Kay, a devoted father to Joel and Callie and Joel’s wife Lorie, a proud grandfather to Lorin and her husband Truett, Hayden and her husband Matt, Baxter, Bryson, Jaxon and Bentley, and a joy-filled great-grandfather to Arthur. He was a faithful attender of every baseball game, football game, soccer match, dance recital, band or choir concert, and school event that they were involved with. He loved taking everyone out to fish and enjoy time on the lake, but mostly he enjoyed getting to see his kids and grandkids do the things they enjoyed. He modeled a life of integrity and faithfulness, always seeking to guide his family with wisdom, humility, and grace. His love for them was obvious and evident in every moment he shared with them.

In addition to his immediate family, Calvin is survived by his sister Carolyn Scheihing of Stillwater, OK and was preceded in death by his parents Donovan and Ethelyn Mott, and his brother William Mott.

Calvin will be remembered for his love for his family, his gentle spirit, his unwavering faith, and the harmony he brought into the lives of others. While his presence will be deeply missed, those who knew him find comfort in the knowledge that he is pain free, and rejoicing in heaven with His Savior, and that all who place their faith and trust in Christ will be reunited with him again soon.

A Memorial service for Calvin will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Faith Bible Church on Monday, May 4, 2026.
