Carolyn "Sue" Wedel
1936-2020
Carolyn "Sue" Wedel affectionately called "Grandmommy", age 84, of Edmond Oklahoma, a woman of extraordinary faith, peacefully went home to her Lord and Savior on December 14, 2020. She will be remembered for her graciousness of spirit and intelligence but mostly as the sweetest, most loving mother and grandmother.
She was born on January 29, 1936 and raised in Fairview, Oklahoma. As the eldest child of a farmer during the Dust Bowl, frugality and hard work were instilled in her upbringing. Sue was very bright and driven, living in town during the school week to attend Fairview High. She found ways to excel at anything she pursued; whether that was helping raise her siblings, cooking for the farm workers, academically as a 4-year member of National Honor Society, or as the captain of the basketball team. It was said that even though she wasn't the best player, her teammates wanted her to be captain because she was a leader. She was chosen as Homecoming Queen and senior class valedictorian. After high school, she attended Enid Business School and to no one's surprise was first in her class.
She met her first and lifelong love when she was a 7 th grader at Fairview High – Mack Wedel. He often said he knew he would marry her the moment he saw her across the gym and she would chime in "I knew he was my guy, too". Mack would ride his bike to the farm to see her and after a few years the couple married at Christ Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
After Mack and Sue were married in 1955, they moved to Tacoma, Washington where Mack was stationed in the Army. This encouraged their lifelong love of traveling – they enjoyed seeing the US on long road trips and made it to all 50 states.
Married for nearly 64 years, they raised their four dear boys, Kent, Greg, Jeff and Todd in Edmond, Oklahoma. Possessing a true servant's heart, Sue faithfully cared for her family and friends with an open door and stocked pantry. She wanted everyone to be comfortable and brought a calmness to the chaos of raising four active boys.
A woman of faith and the heart of the Wedel family, Sue shaped their spirituality by her tireless Christian example. As a founding member of Faith Bible Church of Edmond, Oklahoma, she and Mack served as sanctuary greeters for years. For all the ideas that Mack had, Sue was the one helping them make it happen by doing whatever was needed to lead her family with kindness. She was fiercely sharp, meticulous and always "on it", but at the same time soft, warm, and welcoming but as the four boys knew well – there was no getting anything past Mom.
She never sought attention or to make anything tough for anyone, keeping her home and phone line open for her family at any time. As her beloved husband would say, "this lady here, is the oil in our family. She makes things run smooth." Sue is survived by sister Gay Morrison; son Kent Wedel; son Greg Wedel and wife Valari; son Jeff Wedel and wife Lisa; son Todd Wedel and wife Vicky; grandchildren Blake, Brooks, Jennifer, Colby, Jess, Abby, Aaron, Mark, Hannah and Emalee; great grandchildren Andie, Jack, Lewis, Nora, Harrison, and Hudson.
Greeting her in heaven: her cherished husband, Mack Robert Wedel; her father Jesse Miller and mother Dorothy Miller; her brothers JG and Jim Miller; her sisters Kathryn Kay Miller and Ann Hearon; and brother-in-law Gary Morrison.
