Edmond

Dennis T. Barrett, age 74, was born in Corpus Christi, Florida on January 25, 1951 at 12:04 p.m. Dennis passed away on December 4, 2025 at 12:04 p.m. at his home in Edmond, OK.

Dennis was a second-generation goldsmith with over 45 years in business before retiring in 2024. Owner of Barrett Jewelers, he moved the retail shop to Edmond from Oklahoma City 42 years ago. His jewelry shop provided exceptional jewelry and service. His jewelry repairs often supported the shop in lean years.

Dennis learned everything he knew about jewelry from his father, Ivan, who himself had over 60 years in the jewelry business. They sat side by side for years at their respective repair stations, the son learning from the dad. Even after his dad “retired,” he would spend his days in the shop keeping Dennis company and “causing trouble,” as Dennis liked to joke.

A true workaholic, Dennis had not taken a vacation in over 26 years. His work and customers were important to him. Some of his clients had been with him for 41 years or more and he loved talking with them. Dennis would say he talked too much and that as a result, his customers knew everything about him, good and bad.

Dennis’s humor hid his humble demeanor, but his dedication to quality jewelry shone through. He could tell you where every precious and semi-precious stone was mined and the history of the region.

Dennis’s interest went beyond jewelry, however. He was a voracious reader and had an extensive knowledge in many matters including current events, history, politics, and sports. He also loved a good mystery novel. His dry wit was often mistaken for a gruff exterior to those who did not appreciate his sense of humor. Even after cancer took over him, he never lacked a witty comment. Dennis went on hospice care a year ago, but he was determined to survive until the next Thanksgiving, and he succeeded in reaching that goal.

He started every morning with a steaming hot cup of instant coffee with powdered creamer. An acquired taste for sure, but Dennis loved it. Dennis was cared for until the end by a wonderful group of caregivers who treated him like family.

Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Elsie Barrett. A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Edmond Animal Shelter or an Animal Shelter of your choice.
