Donald LeRoy Bohnert, 88, long time resident of Edmond, passed away Thursday, October 16th, 2025 after a short bout with metastatic cancer. He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Simpson of Edmond; four grandchildren; Amos L Melson II; Ashley D. Ramos; Kevin L. Bohnert; Chance T. Neil; and seven great-grandchildren and many, many “family by heart”.
He was born on May 25,1937 to Leona Beatrice (Jones) Bohnert and Oran George Roy Bohnert on a family farm eleven miles east of Anthony, Kansas in the same bed in the same farmhouse as his mother. When he was about seven years-old, his father died of a farm accident and his mother married his father’s younger brother, Warner Franklin Bohnert. He was the oldest of four children and the family moved to town after his father’s death. He graduated from Anthony High School in 1954 and married Bette in 1956. They began their family with a daughter, Brenda, born in 1957 and a daughter, Cynthia, born in 1959 and a son, David, in 1964. He worked hard at various jobs before settling on truck driving. In 1969, the family moved to Yukon, OK where he began driving for Lee Way Motor Freight and joined the Teamster’s Union. He continued driving for various companies until he had enough years to retire from Teamsters, but not driving. He went to work driving tour buses for Time Lines and later Village Tours. He retired from there in 2020, but could not stop driving. He delivered parts for O’Reilly’s for about six months and settled into his last job of delivering cars for Enterprise Car Sales until late September when he received the cancer diagnosis. His life ended in his daughter’s home while he was on Hospice after only eight days.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends taking trips or simply spending time together visiting about everything, and nothing in particular. He also enjoyed doing puzzle books and reading and playing cards. He was known by all for his ability to talk to anyone; his sense of honesty; and his ethics, integrity and sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by; his wife, Bette in 2014; his son, David in 2002; his daughter, Cindy in 2018; his parents; his two brothers and one sister; and one great-grand child. He had lived in his Edmond home for 30+ years right across the street from his remaining daughter for the last 20 years and until his death.
