Edmond

Frank Peter Schmittner, 81, of Edmond, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026 at Integris Baptist hospital. Frank was born June 24, 1944 in New York City, New York to Peter and Marie Schmittner. Frank grew up alongside his sister Joan (Stengel), when they were not fighting , like siblings often do, he was especially protective of her. During his childhood and into the teenage years, Frank was part of the Boy Scouts of America. With his dad by his side, Frank would take camping trips out of town and his mom would make sure all the boys had plenty of food and treats to keep their stomachs full.

Frank always had excellent grades in school. He attended St. Francis College on scholarship in Brooklyn, NY where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry. He later went on to receive a MBA in 1974 from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.

Frank met his beloved wife Nancy (Bevilacqua) at a dance hall. The two dated until Nancy got tired of waiting and proposed to him. They married on June 2, 1973. The two resided in Yonkers, NY for 48 years. Frank was a devout Catholic and was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Church until moving to Oklahoma. Frank and Nancy became parents in 1985 when they adopted a baby girl through the Catholic Home Bureau.

Frank created a warm and loving home for his only daughter, Toni Ann Sumner (and husband Calvin). You could often find Frank pushing her on a swing, videoing a silly performance, or playing softball in the yard.

Frank was a jack of all trades. His hobbies included working on the cars, reading, tending to plants, and making soup. Frank had many many jobs in his lifetime. He worked for a sugar refinery and sold life insurance through NY Life. He drove limos, sold ice cream at Carvel, and even sold wildlife t-shirts. But Frank’s very favorite, of all the jobs he had, was working at the Yonkers Home Depot, in the paint department. He often told stories of people lining up to ask him questions since he always knew how to help them. Frank never met a stranger. He could drum up a conversation with practically anyone. His sense of humor was often dry but every so often he will interject a little witty quip that would surprise us all. Frank was an avid baseball lover. He was often found watching the Yankees.

Those who know Frank well know that he always had a video camera attached to his hand. You never know what you would find when you watched the videos back. Could be a heartfelt moment or 36 minutes of the car while snow was falling from the sky. It became a widespread joke amongst the extended family that no one ever really got to see the videos after they were taken. So every so often Frank and Nancy would host a watch party for the family. Frank’s dedication to capturing all the important family events was Frank’s small way to show how much family meant to him.

Frank and Nancy moved to Edmond, Oklahoma 3 years ago to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren. Frank was affectionately known as “Papa” to his 5 grandchildren, Lucas(14), Colton (13), Wyatt (13), Adeline (9), and Caroline (9). He enjoyed Sunday dinners with the kids, hovering over his son-in-law Calvin, and attending as many sporting events for his grandchildren as possible. He was actually able to see Wyatt play soccer about a week before his passing.

Frank was a gentle and quiet man, devoted husband, and loving father, and a proud grandfather. He was a man of integrity whose life touched so many. His family will carry their memories of him in their minds and hearts.
