Fred Bozman Schmidt

Fred Bozman Schmidt from Edmond, Oklahoma passed away on August 6, 2026. He was born on May 6, 1950, in Columbus, Ohio to Roger Schmidt and Janette Bozman-Schmidt. Fred was a 1968 graduate of Gahanna High School. He attended Ohio State University from 1968-1970 and played baseball there. He later received his Bachelor of Business Administration of Petroleum Land Management from the University of Texas at Austin in 1975. Fred joined the United States Army in 1970 and was honorably discharged in 1973. Fred married Katherine “Russell” Schmidt on June 3, 1972. He and Kathy lived in Oberammergau, Germany the last year of his military service.

Fred was an avid golfer, fisherman, and huge Ohio State Buckeye fan. He was a lover of all sports lettering in baseball, football and wrestling at Gahanna High School and was inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame in 2023. Fred started his professional career as a petroleum landman for Getty Oil Company in Houston, Texas in 1975. Shortly thereafter, he moved his family to Midland, Texas to begin his career as an independent petroleum landman continuing until his retirement in 2021. Fred and Kathy moved to Edmond, Oklahoma in 1982 where they raised their family and attended First Presbyterian Church. You could always see a smile on Fred’s face while listening to country music, catching up with friends or enjoying the company of his beloved dogs but Fred’s greatest joy was spending time with family whom he dearly loved.

Fred was preceded in death by his mother, father and sister, Evelyn Dickendesher and her husband Rick. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathy, his son Byron Schmidt and his wife Sharon, his daughter Dawn Tomlin and her husband TJ. He was affectionally known as Pops to six grandchildren, Taylor, Tristan and Abigail Tomlin and Delaney, Landon, and Blakely Schmidt. Other survivors include his sister, Karen Heroy and her husband Pete, sister-in-law Debbie Neujahr and her husband Stan, sister-in-law Lana Russell, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Valir Hospice, Caregiver Connection, and his devoted caregivers Risa, Vika, Crystal, Arleeda, Teshae and Victoria.

Donations can be made in honor of Fred to the Alzheimer’s Association and the Lewy Body Dementia Association Inc. Arrangements are under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home in Edmond, Oklahoma.
