Gayle Marye Hurst, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend passed away May 4, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on July 30, 1935, in Dallas, Texas, to George and Dorothy Marye, Gayle graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas and later earned her degree from Texas Tech University. She married the love of her life, Don Hurst, and together they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage before his passing in 2022.
She was a wonderful mother to Mike, Cindy, and Steve, a devoted mother-in-law, and an amazing grandmother to eight grandchildren and great-grandmother to six. She faithfully supported every activity involving her children and grandchildren and traveled to attend the graduations and weddings of the many nieces and nephews she loved. Gayle treasured every opportunity to gather her family together, creating lifelong memories through numerous family summer vacations and family traditions.
Gayle treasured her lifelong friendships and close family relationships, including her sister Susan White and husband Ray; her late brother Buddy Marye and his wife Kitty; and her brother-in-law Louis Hurst and his wife Doris. She found great joy in time spent with friends from her Dallas and Edmond churches, her breakfast group, neighbors, care givers, and Don’s business friends. The Dallas Trade Mart was also a meaningful part of her life, where she formed lasting friendships.
Gayle was known for her sass, warmth, and fun-loving spirit. She never passed up a good game of Rummikub at Lake Hiwassee and enjoyed political conversations, watching the nightly news, and sharing a glass of wine or an Old Fashioned with family and friends. A voracious reader, she enjoyed political thrillers and spy novels, as well as the fellowship of her church book club. Travel brought her great joy, especially visits to New York City for Broadway shows. Throughout her life, Gayle also devoted herself to community service and to service through the Disciples of Christ Church.
Each family member and friend carries a cherished memory or story of time spent with her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, faith, generosity, and family traditions that will continue for generations.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A celebration of her life will be on Saturday June 6, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Southern Hills Christian Church, 3207 S. Boulevard, Edmond, OK 73013. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Outreach Committee at Southern Hills Christian Church.
