George T. Current
1941-2015
George Thomas (Tom) Current departed this life Tuesday, January 27, 2015. He was born March 19, 1941 in Martinsville, Indiana, the first child of George and Mary Current. His early years were spent in Deephaven, Minnesota until 1951 when he and his family moved to Waynesville in southwestern Ohio.
He graduated from Waynesville High School, and attended Ohio University where he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Science degree. Tom was a lifelong learner.
Tom enjoyed his profession. He began his career in 1967 as a petroleum geologist for Union Oil of California in Olney, IL. He was transferred to Oklahoma City in 1973. He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Oklahoma Association of Petroleum Geologists, and the American Institute of Professional Geologists. Tom retired from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission in 2003.
One of Tom's greatest loves was his family. He enjoyed summers at the family cabin in northwestern Ontario with family and friends. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of fishing, cutting wood, building docks, photographing wildlife, working and repairing the generator (before electricity) and many other projects at the cabin; but most importantly, he taught us all how to call moose.
Tom was the best Grandfather, teaching them all life skills, encouraging them in school, building things and sharing many fun outings. He even shared in the wonderful tea parties as a server.
Most importantly as a grandchild said, "Grandpa taught us all how to give and to receive unconditional love, to treat others with love and respect", and to always 'be there' for family and friends.
He began his church service in St. Mary's Waynesville where he was an acolyte. He continued serving the church in Athens. Upon moving to Edmond, he and his family joined St. Mary's Episcopal Church in 1973. Tom served as Sr. Warden, Vestry Member, Chalice Bearer and Lay Reader.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 46 plus years, Patricia (Lawrence), son Tom Jr. and his wife Kelly of Edmond; daughter, Jennifer Current Freels and her husband Roger of Yukon; Aunt Jean Kirk of Edmond, grandchildren, Racheal, Elijah, Patrick, Jaimie, Wesley, Kady, Roger Jr., Riley, and Madi. He is survived by his sister Suzanne Evers, of Lebanon, OH, and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and wonderful nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by parents, George and Mary Current and brother, James Peter Current.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church or the American Diabetes Association.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2015 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Edmond, OK.
Services are under the Direction of Matthews Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Edmond, OK.
