George Ferrell Matheson

Feb 12, 1952 — Sep 27, 2026

George Ferrell Matheson, age 74, passed away peacefully at home in Edmond, Oklahoma, with his beloved wife of 46 years, Sharon, by his side.

George was born on February 12, 1952, in Okinawa, Japan, to Beulah Marie Matheson and Marvin Monroe Matheson, who was stationed there with the U.S. Army at the time. George arrived prematurely and was so tiny that, in those early days, he was carried around on a pillow—a fitting beginning for a man who would go on to live a full and adventurous life.

George grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma, and later began his career in banking. He spent much of his professional life with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). His career took him and his family to communities across the country, giving them the opportunity to experience many different places and meet countless people along the way.

George was outgoing and jovial. He had a way of connecting with people, and many who met him became friends. He was cherished by his family and will be remembered for his generous spirit, his determination, and his unmistakable personality.

In his younger days, George loved staying active and enjoyed golfing, skiing, and traveling. He also had a special passion for model trains, continually building and adding to elaborate landscapes that always seemed to be a work in progress. George took great pride in his home and yard. He was handy, resourceful, and never afraid to take on a challenge—even a few projects that, in retrospect, might have been better left to the professionals.

George is survived by his wife, Sharon; his children, Michael Matheson and Molly Matheson; his sister, Marian Matheson; his grandchildren and one great-grandchild, who brought him immense joy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Marie, and his beloved dog, Hank.

George leaves behind a lifetime of memories, friendships, adventures, and a family who loved him deeply. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.

A memorial service celebrating George's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026, at Edmond Church of Christ, 801 S. Bryant Ave., Edmond, Oklahoma.
