ecognizable laugh, and zest of life, Janis J. Underwood, joined her spouse Al in heaven on February 24, 2015. She was born January 8, 1937 at home in Agawam, Oklahoma to Dude and Grace Berry. Jan was the eldest of three children.
She graduated from Ninnekah High School and became a secretary in the town of Chickasha, Oklahoma. At the tender age of nineteen, Jan met the love of her life Al Underwood and they married on May 22, 1955 in Ninnekah, Oklahoma. Jan stayed home to raise her two children while Al was Superintendent of Schools at Ninnekah. They shortly moved to Newcastle, Oklahoma where Jan became Al's secretary while he served as Superintendent of Schools. Jan then became a legal secretary at Speck Philbin Attorneys in Oklahoma City and eventually was the office administrator. She moved to be the legal assistant to Cary Myatt and Mark Fitch, and then later was Mark Fitch's legal assistant at 50 Penn Place in Oklahoma City until she retired. Jan and Al moved to Sutton Place in Oklahoma City where they made lifelong friends. Jan was an avid reader, loved to go swimming, attended many OU football and basketball games, loved buying purses and shoes, and going to the movies and out to eat. Loving known as "Nana" to her two grandchildren, Jan always bragged to her friends she had the best grandkids in the world. She was always very involved with her many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents Grace Campbell and Dude Berry and her husband of 59 years Al Underwood. She is survived by her daughter Kim Treece and husband Dean Treece of Edmond, Oklahoma; son Tim Underwood and husband Gene Strange of San Francisco, California; grandchildren, Cory Treece and Missi Treece of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and Alexis Treece of Edmond, Oklahoma. Jan is also survived by her brother Ed Berry and wife Debbie Berry; sister Kathryn Weddle-Bayne and Neil Hawthorne; and brother in-law Dean Underwood and wife Dana Underwood; and her numerous nephews and nieces, Chad Berry and wife Kim Berry, Lindsey Smith and husband Shaun Smith, Lisa Prentiss and husband Kent Prentiss, Chris Moore, Terry Underwood and wife Susan Underwood, Mark Underwood and wife Diane Underwood, and Blake Underwood and wife Karen Underwood; and numerous great nephews and great nieces. Jan is also survived by her wonderful relatives and friends of Ninnekah, Newcastle, Oklahoma City, and Sutton Place all whose friendship and support she enjoyed throughout the years. A special thanks to all the doctors, family, and friends that aided Jan in her battle with cancer.
Memorial services will begin at 10:00 a.m. on March 2, 2015, at the Matthews Funeral Home at 601 S. Kelly in Edmond, Oklahoma. Memorial contributions may be sent to Integris Hospice House in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
