John W. Meikle
1939-2015
January 5, 1939 – December 26, 2015
John, the son of John M. and Velda G. Meikle, was born in Enid, Oklahoma. He grew up on the family farm in Hunter, OK. "The Home Place," as he called the farm, was part of the Cherokee Strip Land Run of 1893. His Grandfather made the run. John loved the land and was always a farmer at heart.
He graduated from Hunter High School, attended University of Oklahoma, and graduated from Oklahoma City University. John served in the United States Army. He went to Washington, D.C. with the Department of Agriculture Foreign Agriculture Service and later transferred to the Farmer's Home Administration where he remained until he retired. After retirement John contracted back with the USDA.
While in Washington he met and married Sue Rippon. In May, of this year, they celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary. John and Sue enjoyed traveling, especially to Scotland, where John researched his heritage.
John was an Eagle Scout, a 4-H National Winner, an Outstanding Young Man of America, member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, Chairman of the Oklahoma State Young Republicans, an Elder and Clerk of the Session of the First Presbyterian Church of Statesboro, Georgia, a Kiwanian, and member of the Clan Lamont Society. John was also an accomplished model ship builder and member of the Nautical Research Guild.
John is survived by wife, Sue R. Meikle; his sister, Sharon Ewing and his nephew, Lee Ewing, of Keizer, OR.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Santa Fe Presbyterian Church. A private Internment will be in Hunter, Ok. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Santa Fe Presbyterian Church 1603 North Santa Fe Ave. Edmond, Oklahoma 73003.
