Julia Jean Cox
1943 – 2023
Julia Jean was born July 25 th , 1943 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to James and Wilma Holmes. She grew up in Tulsa and graduated from Will Rogers High School. She went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Business Education from Tulsa University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and could be seen on the sidelines as a TU Cheerleader.
Julia married her high school sweetheart, Larry Cox, on June 18, 1965 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They enjoyed a happy and adventurous life together as Larry served 27 years in the United States Air Force. They were blessed to travel the world and spend time with dear friends in various locations. She loved to travel!
Julia was actively involved in various hobbies and volunteer experiences, including being a member of PEO, serving as a Deacon and Stephen Minister, participating in the Kairos Prison Ministry, and was a high school church leader. She shared her testimony through writing and giving sermons, many of which changed lives. Just this past year, Julia took on a new role and became a foster parent.
Over the years, Julia expressed a deep desire to open a transitional living home for women leaving the prison system. In 2017, with the support of His House Ministries, Christ Community Church and caring family and friends, Julia opened a transitional living home in Edmond, Oklahoma. She helped numerous women as they prepared a new life as she humbly served as director of the home.
Julia loved others as deeply as her Lord and Savior loved her. Prayer and devotion were a part of her everyday life and she was able to see and share how His blessings were being carried out in even the smallest detail. Her relationship with Christ was the foundation behind everything she did. Julia worshipped at First Presbyterian Church, Christ Community Church, and Redemption Church.
Although Julia was dedicated to serving others, her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was the ultimate cheerleader at the grandkids' activities and sporting events. She utilized her organizational skills and creativity in the role of hostess at all family gatherings. She was an excellent cook and will be remembered for her chocolate chip cookies, potato salad and famous cherry pie.
Julia is survived by her daughters, Cindy Lee and Christie Miller and her husband Eric Miller, her grandchildren Zachary Tretheway, Emily Tretheway, Adam Lee, and Jack Lee, her sister Janice Hill, brother-in-law Rick Hill, niece Traci Hill, niece Jennifer Walker, and many other cousins and loved ones. She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Lawrence Oliver Cox, her mother Wilma Loyce Holmes, and her father James Wesley Holmes.
Julia was one of the greatest examples of the church. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her memory will forever be cherished in our hearts.
A memorial service to celebrate Julia's life will be held on Thursday, August 31st, at 10:00 am at First Presbyterian Church of Edmond, located at 1001 South Rankin Street in Edmond, Oklahoma with interment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma at 3:00p.m.
