Kenneth Earl Phillips
1927-2018
Ken Phillips was born on September 28, 1927 in Oklahoma City to Chandler Phillips and Della May (Frew) Phillips, who were pioneers in settling in Oklahoma Territory. He died on May 28, 2018. He was the youngest of 13 siblings.
Ken served in the Coast Guard and the Army Air Corp during WWII. Later he served in the Marines during the Korean conflict, suffering various injuries, including frostbite at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. Later he studied at Oklahoma University for two years. He had an entrepreneurial spirit, with business undertakings as varied as operating a service station, selling real estate, and selling check protectors.
He had a strong faith in God and was known for his friendly, generous spirit.
He was moved to aid and encourage people who were needy and downtrodden, and he was especially concerned for wounded veterans.
Ken's life took on renewed spirit and meaning when he met JoMarie La Torre. They were married on June 28, 1980. They shared various business projects and adventures, including a three-month trip in the southern U.S. in their RV.
Ken was predeceased by his parents and 12 siblings, as well as three grandsons: Scott Phillips, Mark Phillips, and Curt Stewart. He is survived by his beloved wife, JoMarie, four children by a prior marriage: Steve Phillips, Jean Ann Beach, Greg Phillips, and Glenda Carter, and son Jan-Michel Phillips. Also by his cherished church family, the people of TimeOut who meet every Wednesday at St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edmond.
His funeral service will take place at St. John the Baptist at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 6, 2018. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
