Born August 28, 1941, in Golden, OK, LaWanda O’Day died peacefully March 1, 2026, at home in Edmond, OK, surrounded by the love of her family as she faced the final chapter of a life defined by strength, devotion, and deep family roots.
LaWanda is the second oldest of eight children born to John and Marie Taylor. From an early age, she naturally stepped into the role of caretaker and protector, becoming a steady and guiding presence for her younger siblings. That quiet leadership would later define her role as the matriarch of a growing and devoted family.
LaWanda graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City, OK. On January 10, 1966, she married the love of her life, Robert O’Day, Sr in Del City, OK. For six decades, they shared a partnership built on love, loyalty and commitment. LaWanda finished her career at Tinker Air Force Base as an Equipment Specialist for the B2 Bomber.
LaWanda was the kind of mother, grandmother and aunt everyone gravitated toward. The “fun” mom, grandma, and the cool aunt whose house felt like home. At her house, there was always food and goodies ready for anyone who stopped by, with only one rule: clean up after yourself. She welcomed you exactly as you were.
LaWanda was known to be a hard worker and loved life by the lake at Texoma where countless family gatherings were filled with laughter and togetherness. She loved spending time reading, riding on the boat, 4-wheeling, and power walking down trails with the family. She spent many years enjoying the sun out in her vegetables gardens. She adored her small dogs and was known for her no-nonsense personality.
Her legacy is one of strength, hospitality, humor, and fierce love for her family. She was warm, welcoming, yet just intimidating enough to keep you honest.
Throughout her illness, Robert remained faithfully by her side, caring for her with tenderness and unwavering devotion. LaWanda was preceded in death by her parents and beloved children, Dennis Wayne Hume and Geri Ann Taylor, losses she carried with remarkable strength. She is survived by her eldest sister, Sue Harris (Jimmy), youngest sister, Debi Gillespie (Ed), husband Robert O’Day, Sr., son Robert O’Day, Jr. (Roxanne), her cherished grandchildren, Corey Taylor, Jason Taylor, Stacey Siharath (Nicholas), Annie Rose O'Day (great-granddaughter Lyla due May 14, 2026), Braden O'Day, and many extended family members and friends, who loved her dearly.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly Ave., Edmond, OK 73003.
