Loren Wilbur Atwood

Oct 2, 1942 — Oct 12, 2026

Edmond

Loren Wilbur Asp Atwood passed away peacefully in his sleep Monday afternoon, October 12, 2026.

Loren was born October 2, 1942, in Marshall, Minnesota to parents Wilbur David Asp and Fern Arlene Rudd. Loren had two older brothers, David and Gary, and one younger sister, Mary Suzan.

On December 23, 1959, the family officially changed their last name from Asp to Atwood. On New Year’s Eve 1959, Wilbur and Fern Atwood left Marshall, MN arriving in Enid, OK on New Year’s Day 1960 to eventually open the first discount store in Enid known as Atwoods.

After Loren graduated from high school, both he and his high school sweetheart Vera Jean Rasmussen moved from Marshall to Enid to work in the family business. Loren and Vera were married in February 1960 and later had two sons, Steven Loren Atwood and Scott David Atwood.

Through his time living and working in Enid, Loren was an active community member, belonging to the First United Methodist Church, Ambucs, the Rotary Club, and the Grand National Quail Hunt Club, just to name a few.

Loren retired from the family business in 1988 and relocated to Oklahoma City, OK after his divorce from Vera in 1990. He soon started a company called Equity Business Brokers which brought sellers and buyers together to sell or purchase different types of businesses.

During this time in his life, he met Judith (Judy) Ann Puerta, and the two of them were married on January 11, 1996. Years later Loren retired from the brokerage business with Judy at his side. The pair spent time traveling with friends, visiting new places and doing activities with all his grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as “Big Pop”. For many years Loren and Judy hosted Easter egg hunts for the grandchildren, and Easter lunch for the family. One of the favorite holiday celebrations that everyone looked forward to was the annual Christmas Eve Oyster Stew party, held at Loren and Judy’s house where Loren made two bog pots of oyster stew. If oyster stew was not your thing, no problem, Judy cooked up a big smorgasbord of different things to eat. It was everyone’s most favorite time of year, celebrating with family and friends during Christmas.

During all the years of his life, Loren enjoyed the company of his family and friends. Playing cards with his poker group, playing golf and handball, flying airplanes and boating, hunting, and fishing and scuba diving.

Loren loved our Lord, his family, and all his friends. He truly lived a long, successful, full, and happy life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Fern Atwood of Enid, Oklahoma and his oldest brother, David Atwood of Mesa, Arizona.

Loren is survived by his wife, Judy Atwood, his sons Steve (Sherry) Atwood and Scott (Angie) Atwood, all of Edmond, Oklahoma. His grandchildren, Chase (Harper) Atwood, Savannah Atwood (Colter Roetker), and Taylor Atwood. His great grandson Colter Roetker. His older brother Gary (Johnnie) Atwood, and younger sister Mary Suzan (Dr. Stephen) Chambers, his brother David’s children and grandchildren, Judy’s children, daughter Gayle Kirkpatrick and her children, and her son Michael Puerta and his children.
