Mary Ann Harris

May 6, 1933 — April 15, 2026

Edmond

Mary Ann Harris of Edmond, Oklahoma, went home to be with the Lord on April 15, 2026, in Edmond. From a young age, Mary placed her trust in Jesus Christ and followed Him faithfully throughout her life. We know she is resting with Him now.

Mary was born on May 6, 1933, to Joseph Alanzo and Icy Mae George in Ada, Oklahoma. She was the youngest of three children. She attended grade school in a one-roomed house, proudly riding her horse, Pinto, to school each day. She went on to attend high school at Mclish in Hardin City, Oklahoma, where she was crowned the Senior Prom Queen.

In 1949, Mary Ann met the love of her life, John Harris. The two met in geography class and went on their first date on October 24. Their love grew quickly, and the two were married on June 3, 1951, at the First Methodist Church in Fittstown, Oklahoma. By this time, Mary had just graduated from high school, and John was about to enter his Senior year. The following year, the newlyweds moved to Arlington, Virginia, where they both began working for the U.S. government.

In 1953, Mary and John returned briefly to Oklahoma before relocating to Borger, Texas, where they welcomed four children into the world: John Richard Jr., Danny Paul, Jeanne Sue, and Bobby Glen. Mary’s pride and joy were found in raising her children and tending to their home.

In 1970, Mary went on to pursue her associates degree and earned her LPN, working as nurse for about two years while her children were in school. She spoke about her work fondly, as being a caregiver came to her naturally.

In the mid-70’s, Mary and John took up playing tennis in their spare time, inspired by their son’s love for the sport. Mary also enjoyed baking, water aerobics, and playing the piano. Her family loved to gather around and listen to her play each of her pianos. She was known to make up songs for special occasions and loved to play “The Boogie”.

After John retired, he and Mary remained in Hobbs, New Mexico, for a year before moving to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, then Edmond, Oklahoma, and later to Houston, Texas. Every location allowed them a special time to be close to each of their four children and families. In 2021, John and Mary moved back to Edmond, Oklahoma to be near their newly-retired son and his wife.

Throughout all her life, Mary maintained a gentleness and sweetness that was recognized by all those who knew her and loved her. She was kind to everyone and never raised her voice. She will be deeply missed by everyone who was lucky enough to know her.

Mary is survived by her four children, John Richard Jr. (Jackie), Danny Paul (Sheri), Jeanne Sue (Walt), and Bobby Glen (Peggy); and eight grandchildren: Kailey (Bryce), Blake (Isla), Eric (Kristin), Kris (Rosemary), Ashley (Pete), Bobby (LaDonna), Stephen (Abi), and Stephanie (Randy). Mary was blessed with seven great-grandchildren: William, John David, Nathan, Abby, Madison, Esther and Mary.

The family would like to express their gratitude for the care and compassion provided by the staff at The Veraden Senior Living and the hospice team at Companion Healthcare.
