Michael Franklin Dean, 77, of Edmond, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2025, at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on November 2, 1947, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Michael lived a life marked by service, persistence, hard work, and kindness. A proud veteran, he honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1970 to 1975, then continuing his commitment in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1992 when he retired from service after his tour in Desert Storm. His many commendations include the National Defense Service Medal, the NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal, among numerous others.
Michael was also known for his impressive career as a DJ, News Director, Music Director, and Engineer for numerous TV and Radio stations across Oklahoma and Kansas. He served as the long time Producer and Engineer for the Sooner Sports Network traveling with the OU Football & Basketball teams from 1991-2021 for game broadcasts. He became known as one of the country's leading experts in that space.
Michael served as the Public Relations Director for the Oklahoma State Department of Environmental Quality and then held the same role for the Oklahoma Historical Society / Oklahoma History Center. During this time he also authored and co-authored several published books, including a biography about long time close friend, Bob Barry, Sr. He was also an avid Ham radio operator and photographer.
Michael was an active member of the Edmond Church of Christ, where he found spiritual community and purpose. He found joy in the simple things—cooking for those he loved, traveling with his wife Phyllis, studying history, and always learning. His life was a testimony to service, intellect, and heart.
He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Prichard Dean; stepchildren Brantley Cowan and Lance Roberts; daughter Becky Bechtold; daughter-in-law Christy Roberts; grandchildren Mason Roberts, Gannon Roberts, Jake Batscha, and Camry Couch; his beloved aunts Nancy McCall and Patty; and his cousin Jim. He is also remembered by many cherished family members and friends who were touched by his warmth, wit, and wisdom.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Louise Dean, along with several other dear family members who welcomed him home.
Services will be held July 12, 2025, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Edmond Church of Christ, 801 S Bryant Ave, Edmond, OK 73034. Inurnment will take place at the Norman IOOF Cemetery.
