Minnie Lee Miller

Feb 7, 1926 – Jan 26, 2018

Minnie Lee Miller, 91, entered into eternal peace on Friday, January 26th, 2018, due to complications of a stroke. Minnie was well known as the matriarch of Miller Floors, the family owned business she founded in 1947 with her husband Fred. Minnie did not retire until May of 2015.

Minnie was born February 7  th  , 1926, in Hammon, Oklahoma to Edward E. and Nonnie Blount. After graduating from Hammon High School in 1944. Minnie moved with friends to Wichita, KS to work on an aircraft assembly line in support of the war efforts. When the war ended, Minnie moved to Oklahoma City, where she opened a downtown café. There she met her future husband, Fred J. Miller. In 1947, they opened Miller Floors on 12  th  and Young. To supplement the new enterprise, she also worked as a night waitress at Cattlemen's.  For a girl who had been raised in the cotton fields of Roger Mills Co. during the dust bowl, the Depression, and WWII, she had the gumption, tenacity, and self-determination to make a success of it. She attributed her stamina in part to her grandmother who had driven a covered wagon with her father, five children, and while pregnant to Hammon to claim a share of the Unassigned Land.

After the death of Fred in 1976, Minnie continued running the successful business. Minnie enjoyed entertaining, treating her friends, clients and relatives to her memorable gatherings at Jr's, Haunted House and Twelve Oaks restaurants. Minnie also enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe with her sister-in-law, Mary Lou Grovenburg, often visiting longtime friends, Al and Jean Fisher in London and Spain.

Preceded in death by husband Fred J. Miller, children, Ed Miller and Denise Colley, she is survived by her brother Don Blount (Bama) and children, Fred Miller Jr.  (Hilary), Terri Underhill (Dr. Keith), and Annette Lauzon (Chuck). She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren & 25 great grandchildren, a niece and a nephew.

We will be celebrating Minnie's life on Saturday February 3rd, 2:00 pm, at Touchmark, 2801 Shortgrass, Edmond, Oklahoma. We would like to thank the staff at Touchmark for their loving care of our mother and the hospice staff at Mercy Hospital.
