Richard Morton Nowlin, 79, of Edmond, Oklahoma, passed away surrounded by family.
Richard was born on April 20, 1946, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Bettye (Lux) Scott and Eugene Nowlin. He graduated from Oklahoma State University, remaining a proud Cowboy throughout his life.
Richard faithfully served his country in the United States Army and Army Reserve for 28 years, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He served in the Army Airborne division and was stationed in Germany before joining the Army Reserve. His military service was a point of deep pride and a foundation for his discipline, leadership, and commitment to others.
Richard was a longtime member of New Covenant Church in Edmond, where his servant’s heart was evident to all who knew him. He was also deeply involved in OKC AMBUCS for more than 42 years, helping provide AmTryke therapeutic bicycles and tricycles to children and adults in need of greater mobility and independence. Through that work, he touched many lives and formed lasting friendships.
Richard also loved woodturning, as well as other artistic media. He loved to teach and demonstrate and often shared his creations with family and friends.
Richard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pamela Joy (Finlayson) Nowlin; his son, Christopher “Kit” Nowlin; daughter-in-law, Madison Sargent; and his beloved grandchildren, Connor, Allison, and Jacob Nowlin, who brought him immense joy and pride. He is also survived by extended family and a host of dear friends who will miss his steady presence, gentle humor, and generous spirit.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bettye Galen (Lux) Scott, and his father, Eugene Nowlin.
Richard’s life was marked by service to his country, his church, his community, and his family. Those who knew him will remember his loyalty, his unique gift for storytelling, his creativity, and his deep care for the people around him.
A service celebrating Richard’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 21, at New Covenant Church in Edmond, Oklahoma, with a burial service at 2 p.m. at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s honor may be made to:
