Lieutenant Colonel S. Sherman Sarff, USAF (Ret), passed away on March 24, 2024, at his home in Edmond. He was born on January 18, 1940, in Springfield IL, the son of Sanford S. and Lucille Sarff. He was a 1958 graduate of Lanark High School in Lanark IL and a 1963 graduate of Bradley University in Peoria IL, where he was a member of Lamba Chi Alpha fraternity. On August 6, 1963, Sherman was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. While stationed at Tinker Air Force Base he was introduced to Viki Beth Cunningham of Edmond. They were married on October 9, 1965, and began an almost 60-year journey together. They established homes in Okinawa, Colorado, Arizona, Alabama, Iran and finally back home to Edmond. Sherman also served a tour of duty in Vietnam. His best assignment was Chief of Supply and Commander 29 th Supply Squadron, Craig Air Force Base, Alabama. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel on June 30, 1983. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Commendation Medal. After retirement he worked for two different companies sharing his knowledge of Air Force supply and logistics. Sherman loved cooking for his family on holidays and Sooner football Saturdays. His specialties were smoked baby back ribs and brisket. He was also a Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed their 2016 World Series championship. Sherman is survived by his wife Viki of Edmond, daughter Stacie Beth Sarff of Edmond, son Scott Sherman Sarff of Oklahoma City, sister-in-law Deneice Cunningham Rice (Bradley R.) of Madison, GA, and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his favorite dogs, Sunshine the Beagle, and Ema the Airedale Terrier. Visitation will be at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 28, at Matthews Funeral Home in Edmond, with graveside services at Gracelawn Cemetery in Edmond at 11:00 am on Friday, March 29. Sherman was a beloved son, husband, and father as he provided a wonderful life for his family. We will miss him.
