Shelby D. Barnes
1927-2018
Dr. Shelby Dee Barnes, 90, passed away on August 25, 2018 at his home in Deer Creek. Shelby was born on September 12, 1927, in Summerfield, OK, to Joseph Porter and Lucy Cordelia Barnes. Their family was loving and close and, until recently, continued to get together annually in McAlester, OK. Shelby had 5 brothers: Eudell (Marveda), Stan (Sally), Darrell (Ruby), Jerry (Bobbie), and Aaron (Carol Ann), and 1 sister Wyona (Lloyd) Brannon. Shelby was a proud member of the United States Air Force (but because of color blindness, was denied his dream of being an air force pilot). Shelby attended Eastern Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical School in Wilburton, OK, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma Medical School. He met his wife Dorothy Jean at Tinker Air Force Base. Shelby and Jean were married for 63 years until Jean passed away in 2015. After medical school, Shelby and Jean and their growing family lived briefly in California and Hollis, OK, ultimately returning to Oklahoma City and making their home in the Deer Creek area. Shelby obtained a private pilot's license and loved flying — even though most family members were a little scared to fly with him. He loved practicing medicine and started Urology Associates with his partners Dr. Bobby Smith and Dr. Paul Donat, and he considered it a privilege to partner and practice medicine with his son Danny. But most of all, he was a proud dad to his five children, a proud granddad of his eleven grandchildren and his six great-grandchildren. He is survived by his son Danny and his wife Garva; and daughter Shelley; grandchildren, Shawn, Ryan, Patrick, Nathan, Kyle, Kari, Taylor, Jay, Bri, Shelby, and Drew; and great-grandchildren, Sofia, Parker, Peyton, Brodie, Wyatt, and Claire. He is preceded in death by his wife Jean, his sons Rick, Steve, and David, his parents, brothers Eudell, Stan, Darrell, and Jerry, sisters Wyona and an infant sister. The family would like to give special thanks to Jayelene Garton for her wonderful care of our dad and granddad over these last years of his life. Visitation will be at Matthews Funeral Home 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday, August 27 th . Funeral Services will be at Matthews Funeral Home at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 28 th , 2018. The burial will follow at the Czechoslovakian National Cemetery, SW 44th and S. Villa, OKC.
