Dr. Singleton Dewayne “Wayne” McMullan passed away on August 15, 2025, with his wife and daughter by his side. He was born in Union, Miss. to Singleton and Mary Lou (Hollingsworth) McMullan, the third of four children, on September 13, 1943.

His early years were spent in Decatur, MS, on the family’s small cotton and peanut farm. He graduated from Miss State University with a BA degree. He later attained a master’s degree in clinical social work at the University of Tennessee, as well as a doctorate in public administration from Nova University in Florida.

Wayne met the love of his life, Elizabeth Clement while both were in grad school at the University of Tennessee. They were married in 1966, and had two children, Tim and Susan. A veteran, Wayne served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service.

Wayne’s career as a mental health professional, and as a health administrator with the U.S. Public Health Service took the family from Mississippi to Indian reservations in Montana and Oklahoma. During these tours, he was instrumental in helping establish the first Indian operated residential substance abuse treatment facility in America for American Indians. During his career he was widely recognized as a pioneer in the efforts to combat substance abuse among Native Americans. Following his retirement from the U.S. Public Health Service he established a private counseling firm and provided consultation to numerous Indian tribes throughout the country in their development of substance abuse treatment programs.

Wayne’s primary missions in life were to be a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and a trusted friend. He and Liz loved to travel, both on national and international trips, and in their RV. They were fortunate to visit all 50 states and 7 continents.

Wayne was a member of Edmond’s First United Methodist Church and was a member of the church’s hospital visitation team. Throughout his life he served in numerous church leadership positions and was a member of several different civic groups. He also volunteered as a youth baseball coach and scout leader for many years. “He tried to make a difference.”

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Shirley Hackman; and a brother Larry McMullan. He is survived by his bride of 58 year, Liz; son, Tim McMullan and wife Stacy of Shawnee, Oklahoma; daughter Susan Ledgerwood and husband Dan of Cushing, Oklahoma; a sister, Sue Tennyson and husband Ken of Katy, Texas; sister in law, Ellen McMullan of Mobile, AL; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
