Stephen Enoch Cunningham

Stephen Enoch Cunningham, affectionately known as “Mr. Fix It,” was born December 8, 1944, in Indiana to Edward and Kathleen Cunningham. The oldest of six children, Steve joined the United States Air Force at the age of 18.

While stationed at McClellan Air Force Base, Steve met Mary Nell Schnetzler, the woman who would become the love of his life and his partner in everything that followed. Just before leaving for his first tour in Vietnam, Steve asked Mary to marry him. They were married on November 18, 1966, in Oklahoma City, beginning a marriage that would span nearly 60 years.

Through military deployments, raising three children, career changes, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, ordinary days and difficult ones, Steve and Mary built a life side by side. In 1975, they built their home in Edmond, Oklahoma, where so much of that life unfolded. It was more than a house. It became the home where they raised their family, welcomed grandchildren and great-grandchildren, celebrated countless milestones, and created a lifetime of memories together.

During his military career, Steve completed additional tours in Vietnam, serving as a backseater in F-105 aircraft and receiving numerous medals and commendations for his service. Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Steve continued building a life defined by hard work, curiosity, and an ability to do just about anything. He owned a motorcycle shop, was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus, earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in Education from the University of Central Oklahoma, and went on to teach at Choctaw Middle School and Metro Tech's Springlake Campus. He later worked for Mercury Marine Corporation, retiring in 2016.

Retirement, however, didn't mean slowing down for Steve. For nine years, he volunteered with the Hope Center at Hopefully Yours, where his ability to repair nearly anything earned him the nickname “Mr. Fix It.” It was a name that suited him well, but those who loved him will remember far more than the things he could fix. They will remember his bright smile, his quick wit, his willingness to lend a hand, the things he loved to build with his grandchildren, and the deep love he had for his family. At the center of that family was Mary.

Steve was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, teacher, veteran, friend, and, of course, “Mr. Fix It.” He could build and repair just about anything, but the greatest thing he built was a life with Mary and the family that grew from their love. That will be his greatest legacy.

Steve leaves behind his beloved wife, Mary Nell Cunningham; his son, Mike Cunningham and wife Stephanie; daughters, Cheryl Behm and Kelly Lowrance and husband Scott; six grandchildren, Zack, Seth, Macy, Cade, Redik, and Taylor; five great-grandchildren; his sister, Susan Thomae; and three younger brothers, Doug, Chris, and Tim Cunningham. 

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Stephen Cunningham will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edmond, Oklahoma. Interment will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery in Edmond, Oklahoma.
