Verda Dene Howie
1930-2015
Verda Dene Howie, went to heaven November 17, 2015. She was born October 3, 1930, at home in a log room in McMillan, Oklahoma. She graduated two years early from Madill High School in 1947 at the age of 16. At 18, she went to work for H.M. Carter Insurance Company in Ardmore, Oklahoma, where she shared an apartment with her cousins. Those same cousins set her up on a blind date where she met the love of her life, Dick Howie. Verda and Dick married on October 22, 1954, at the Lebanon Church of Christ. Afterwards, they immediately drove to Tucson, Arizona where Dick was stationed in the Air Force. All three of their children were born there, Vince, Marc and Patricia. In 1961 they moved back to Oklahoma living in Bartlesville for one year and then to Midwest City for two years. Then in 1965 they moved to Norman for 28 years. While in Norman she attended Westside Church of Christ, taught bible class for 20 years, worked at the University of Oklahoma student affairs for 10 years, and was active with Living Word Academy ladies group. In 1993, she moved to Edmond where she resided until death. She enjoyed cooking, baking, cake decorating, cooking competitions, crocheting, sewing, traveling, ladies Bible class and especially family events. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Arvel & Clyde Saxon and her husband, Dick Howie.
She is survived by her sister, Barbara King; brother, J.A. Saxon; sons, Vince and Marc Howie, daughter, Patricia Hopkins, and their spouses, Johnny King, Mary Ann Saxon, Dejuana Howie, Mike Hopkins, Melissa Howie; eight grandchildren: April Howie, LeTricia Smith, Abby Pogorzelski, Elizabeth, Michelle and Jessica Hopkins, Jordan and Ian Howie; 10 great grandchildren: Faith, Hanna, Colton, Carson, Parker, Tyson, Bailey, Mehla, Lily, and Lucy. Loving wife, devoted mother, Big Sis, aunt and friend to all. She will be missed dearly. A viewing will be held on Thursday, November 19 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 20, 2015 at the Edmond Church of Christ.
