Walker Edwards left this world on September 3, 2025, a few weeks shy of his 75th birthday. He was born on September 26, 1950 to Don and Donna Edwards and he carried their lessons of kindness and resilience throughout his life.
He grew up in Oklahoma City, graduating from Putnam City High School in 1968. His love of music led him to play the drums and during his high school years he was a member of bands The Nickel Trip and The Gentlemen. At one memorable school performance, the principal “pulled the plug” on their amplifiers, but the band kept playing (and the crowd kept screaming!).
After attending Southwestern Oklahoma State University for two semesters, Walker joined the international singing group Up with People as the drummer for their Summer 1969 tour of Spain, Italy, and Germany. Later that year, he enlisted in the US Army and served honorably as a Military Police officer. He trained in Honolulu and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, where he competed as a tournament tennis player for the US Army.
Following his service, Walker attended Santa Barbara Community College before returning to Oklahoma and graduating from the University of Oklahoma in the spring of 1977. He began his professional life as a land man in the oil and gas industry, a role that later opened the door to a 35-year career as an accountant in the field.
In 1980 he married the love of his life Cathy, and their daughter Elizabeth was born the following year. He was a devoted and caring husband and to his daughter, he was a tireless softball coach, treehouse engineer, math tutor, (very busy) car mechanic, and steadfast source of support. To Elizabeth, he passed down his fervor for Sooner Football— a legacy that began the day she was born. Walker's only grandchild Avital was born in 2006, and his pride in her was evident. He took great joy in playing football and tennis, biking, and swimming with her during her visits to Oklahoma. One of his most cherished memories was traveling with Cathy to celebrate Avital’s Bat Mitzvah in New York City.
Walker seemed to know everyone, everywhere he went. To spend a day with him was to meet any number of people along the way. He was funny and kind, knew everyone’s name, and was beloved by many.
His faith in the promises of Jesus Christ was the foundation of his life. Walker served many years as an elder at his church and dedicated countless hours to the study of Biblical Greek and Hebrew. His hope was anchored in the Gospel, and his family takes great comfort in knowing he is now at peace with his Savior.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, his daughter, and his granddaughter. He is also survived by his sister Cindy, his brother Adrian, along with many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his niece, Sara Nicole Elliott.
A celebration of Walker’s life will be held on Saturday, September 13th at 2pm at New Covenant Bible Church, 4230 S Youngs Blvd., Oklahoma City where his memory will be honored by sharing stories, laughter, and love.
